"The Hermit", a wall sculpture made of Cherry and dyed Box Elder Burl. This is part of my "Sacred Places" series. An exploration of man's quest for something greater than himself, his/her spirituality. I used a blue dyed piece of Box Elder Burl as a spire for the hermit. This represents the hermit, pregnant with knowledge, hidden away from society within his mountain retreat.
This was created on a wood lathe. The piece was sanded and a multi-step finishing process was applied. Then it was moved over to the bandsaw where the it was deconstructed and then finally reassembled in a completely new concept.
I have four basic goals that I strive to achieve with my work:
• Design and create pieces that complement the wood.
• Explore the concept of creating a sense of movement with an inanimate object.
• Design pieces in such a way as to visually “stretch” portions of the piece to appear either larger, smaller or a different shape that it actually is. (This applies primarily to my sculptural work and my wall hangings.)
• Be as ecologically responsible as possible with my woodwork. I use as much salvage as possible and much of my other material is grown specifically for commercial purposes.
This piece would look spectacular in your office, dining room, bedroom or the lobby of your business.
All woods can have natural cracks and voids and these are not considered defects. It was hand sculpted on my lathe by me. Like any natural wood product, it should not be placed in direct sunlight for long periods.
