Sculpture Turned wood, "Slipstream", wall hanging

This intriguing artistic wall hanging is called “Slipstream” and is made out of Mulberry wood. It has a reassuring yellow/orange color to it. I have left the natural bark edge on to further the “rustic” feel of the piece. It is 48” wide, 18” tall and 1 7/8” thick. It was completely sculpted by me on my lathe. Turned as a solid piece and carved prior to segmenting and realigning the pieces.

I have four basic goals that I strive to achieve with my work:
• Design and create pieces that complement the wood.
• Explore the concept of creating a sense of movement with an inanimate object.
• Design pieces in such a way as to visually “stretch” portions of the piece to appear either larger, smaller or a different shape that it actually is. (This applies primarily to my sculptural work and my wall hangings.)
• Be as ecologically responsible as possible with my woodwork. I use as much salvage as possible and much of my other material is grown specifically for commercial purposes.

It is pre-hung with eye hooks and wire on the back. The final picture show the inscription placed on the side of the piece. It has my name, the year it was created, the title of the piece and the word "Spiritwolf". Family legend has that this was a long ago ancestors surname and is place on all my sculptural pieces as a way to pay homage to my ancestors.
